Former Loras College soccer standout, Dan Rothert the Head Men’s Soccer Coach and Associate Athletic Director at Loras College. Before being named Associate Athletic Director in March 2015, Rothert was the Head Men’s and Women’s Soccer Coach at Loras, a position he held since 1998.
Over the past 19 seasons, Rothert's teams are regarded as some of the best in the country. The 2016 season saw the men’s team win their fifth consecutive and 11th overall IIAC title under Rothert. Further, in 2015, Loras advance to the Final Four for the fifth time in program history and third time in the previous four seasons. In the national semifinal against top-ranked Calvin College, the Duhawks earned their first trip to the National Championship with a 1-nil victory.
The men's teams have won the Iowa Conference championship 11 times and advanced to the NCAA tournament in 11 seasons, where they have had repeated success on the national stage. The men have advanced to the "Sweet 16" four times ('05, '09, '10, '14), and five times to the Final Four ('07, '08, '12, '13, '15). Additionally, Rothert’s women's teams won the Iowa Conference nine times and the IIAC Tournament 11 times with 11 NCAA appearances, which were highlighted by three runs to the Sweet 16 ('03, '10, '12).
Rothert has been named Iowa Conference Coach of the Year 14 total times in his 18-year career and has been named Regional Coach of the Year three times. Following the 2012 season, Rothert was named the CaptainU National Coach of the Year after Loras advanced to the NCAA Final Four. After the national runner-up finish in 2015, Rothert was selected to Coach the USA Select DIII All-Star team in Brazil in the summer 2016.
Rothert has a career coaching record of 573-195-49 overall (303-99-25 with the men and 270-96-24 with the women) while at Loras. His student-athletes have received many honors both on the field and in the classroom during their careers. Notably, he has mentored 14 All-Americans, six Academic All-Americans, 15 Iowa Conference MVP's and a National Defensive Player of the Year.
Rothert holds the highest soccer coaching licenses attainable. He has obtained the USSF "A" License, the NSCAA Premier Diploma, the NSCAA Goalkeeper National Diploma and US Soccer's National Youth License and served on the NCAA Men’s Soccer Committee for the 2010-2012 seasons, including a season as chair of that committee in 2012. Rothert is also the President and founder of Key City Soccer Association, a youth soccer club in Dubuque.
Prior to becoming the head coach at Loras, Rothert was the assistant women's soccer and assistant women's basketball coach at Plattsburgh State (N.Y.) where the soccer team was 1996 New York State Conference Champions. Rothert served as the assistant coach at Loras in the 1997 season and was the head boys' soccer coach at Dubuque Senior High School from 1997-2000, earning "Coach of the Year" honors in 1997.
Rothert has both his undergraduate ('96) and master's ('99) degrees from Loras in physical education where he was a four-year letterwinner. He and his wife Karen, a Loras graduate ('98 & '03) and former volleyball student-athlete for the Duhawks, reside in Dubuque with their two sons, Danny (10) and Jack (8), and daughter, Kate (6).
